Learning non-native phonotactic constraints over the web

چکیده
Although it is well known that a listener’s linguistic experience influences their perception of non-native speech sounds, many researchers have access to a limited range of listener populations. Building on recent work, we examined if this issue could be addressed by conducting non-native speech perception experiments over the internet. We developed a web-based version of an implicit learning paradigm that exposes participants to novel phonotactic constraints. We found that native English listeners could acquire novel constraints based on both nativeand non-native language auditory stimuli. Critically, the degree of success in learning non-native patterns reflected the relationship between the nativeand non-native sound systems. This suggests that web-based experimentation is a viable means of examining nonnative speech perception, creating opportunities to test a wider array of participant populations.

The direct and indirect effects of the phonotactic constraints in the listener's native language on the comprehension of reduced and unreduced word pronunciation variants in a foreign language
This study investigates how the comprehension of casual speech in foreign languages is affected by the phonotactic constraints in the listener’s native language. Non-native listeners of English with different native languages heard short English phrases produced by native speakers of English or Spanish and they indicated whether these phrases included can or can’t. Native Mandarin listeners esp...
متن کاملThe Role of Phonotactics in the Segmentation of Native and Non- Native Continuous Speech
Previous research has shown that listeners make use of their knowledge of phonotactic constraints to segment speech into individual words. The present study investigates the influence of phonotactics when segmenting a non-native language. German and English listeners detected embedded English words in nonsense sequences. German listeners also had knowledge of English, but English listeners had ...
متن کاملPhonological naturalness and phonotactic learning
We investigate whether the patterns of phonotactic well-formedness internalized by language learners are direct reflections of the phonological patterns they encounter, or reflect in addition principles of phonological naturalness. As a research tool we employ the phonotactic learning system of Hayes and Wilson (2008), which carries out an unbiased search of the lexicon for valid phonotactic ge...
متن کاملPhonotactic Constraints Are Activated across Languages in Bilinguals
During spoken language comprehension, auditory input activates a bilingual's two languages in parallel based on phonological representations that are shared across languages. However, it is unclear whether bilinguals access phonotactic constraints from the non-target language during target language processing. For example, in Spanish, words with s+ consonant onsets cannot exist, and phonotactic...
متن کاملA “Bat” Is Easier to Learn than a “Tab”: Effects of Relative Phonotactic Frequency on Infant Word Learning
Many studies have shown that during the first year of life infants start learning the prosodic, phonetic and phonotactic properties of their native language. In parallel, infants start associating sound sequences with semantic representations. However, the question of how these two processes interact remains largely unknown. The current study explores whether (and when) the relative phonotactic...
